I’ll be honest: when I finished the main story of The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, I did not expect to keep thinking about Master Kohga. Ganondorf is the big bad, the Demon King sealed beneath Hyrule Castle, and the final fight is appropriately epic. But if we ever get story DLC in 2026, Ganondorf probably cannot be the focus. Since the game has no post-game segment and the finale is definitive, any additional adventure would have to happen before that confrontation. That means we need a different villain to fill the spotlight—and I think the Yiga Clan’s ridiculous, surprisingly dangerous leader is the obvious choice.

Kohga’s survival story is already perfect for a new quest. In Breath of the Wild, he fell into a seemingly bottomless pit after botching his own move. Somehow, he survived, landed in the Depths, and spent years rebuilding the Yiga Clan underground. In Tears of the Kingdom, Link hunts him through abandoned mines, fights his Zonai Device contraptions, and eventually destroys a massive mech. Kohga then gets launched into the sky by his own rocket while screaming about revenge. If that is not a DLC hook, I do not know what is.

Why Kohga Is the Perfect DLC Villain

  • He is alive: The rocket launch is played for comedy, but nothing suggests he died. He has survived worse.

  • He is motivated: Kohga wants revenge on Link, and he has the resources and followers to try again.

  • He is underestimated: His bumbling personality hides real cunning. He is the only Yiga who instantly sees through Link’s Yiga Clan disguise.

  • He controls advanced tech: The Yiga repurpose Zonai Devices better than most of Hyrule, which means new machines and challenges could be introduced.

  • He could expand the map: If he relocates to the Sky Islands, the game could finally make the sky feel alive.

Taking the Fight to the Sky

The last time we see Kohga, he is soaring upward out of the Depths. It would make perfect sense for the DLC to place him—and maybe the rest of the Yiga Clan—on the Sky Islands above Hyrule. This would be a clever mirror to their earlier occupation of the Depths. It would also fix one of Tears of the Kingdom’s most common complaints: the sky is often too empty. Many Sky Islands are small, barren, and spread far apart. Populating them with Yiga fortresses, patrols, and hidden camps would give players a reason to explore the sky again.

What That DLC Could Look Like

  • Flying Yiga fortresses: The Yiga could use Zonai fans, rockets, and floating platforms to create airborne bases.

  • New Yiga Schematics: If Link defeats these new camps, he could receive fresh Autobuild plans for combat vehicles and traversal machines.

  • A new boss fight: Kohga could return with a more dangerous Zonai mech, now adapted for aerial combat.

  • New gear and rewards: Yiga-themed armor upgrades, elemental weapons, or a reusable flight module would be fun.

  • Sage involvement: The sages could join Link for a coordinated attack, which would give them more post-recruitment screen time.

Kohga Is More Dangerous Than He Looks

It is easy to laugh at Kohga. He constantly sabotages himself, yells too much, and seems more theatrical than threatening. But that personality hides real skill. Under his leadership, the Yiga have learned to use Zonai Devices in ways that nobody else in Hyrule has matched. He also spotted Link through the Yiga armor, proving he is not easily fooled. If the clan moves into the sky, they would be almost unreachable for most of Hyrule’s people. Even the Rito do not normally fly as high as the Sky Islands, aside from special story moments. From that height, Kohga could threaten the surface with devastating attacks while remaining safe. Only Link—and perhaps the sages—could stop him.

This setup also respects the main story. Because Ganondorf is stuck beneath Hyrule Castle before the final battle, a pre-final DLC needs a separate antagonist. Kohga has enough history, personality, and unfinished business to carry a full new storyline. He can be funny, but the stakes could still feel real if he gets airborne weapons pointed at villages. I would love to see a duel on a crumbling sky fortress, with Link using the paraglider, Zonai machines, and maybe a new Sage ability to chase Kohga through the clouds.

I have no idea if Nintendo will ever release more Tears of the Kingdom content. But if they do, Master Kohga is the most natural villain to bring back. His story already points upward, and the game has a perfect empty playground waiting for him. Give me the Yiga in the sky, some new schematics, and one more ridiculous rocket-powered mech. I am ready. 💣🪂
